Swan and Waterbird Rescue

Rescue Gallery

Showing a few examples of the rescues not only of swans but of all types of waterbirds taken over the last couple of years.

'Helping these beautiful majestic birds in their time of need is my privilege'

I feel very fortunate to have other rescuers to call upon when help is needed.  The welfare of the bird is paramount and we all work together when a more complex situation arises to ensure the very best outcome for the bird.

Fishing Tackle

One of the most common call outs is to a bird with discarded hooks, line and tackle, either partially swallowed, deeply embedded or long lengths of line wrapped around legs and wings restricting their movement.  Left untreated this can lead to severe wounds, starvation, internal bleeding, loss of limbs and possible drowning.  If you see a bird suffering with these issues please call a rescue immediately.

Cygnet Chase Offs and Territorial Battles

Swans are fiercely territorial and will protect their lake from intruders often with devastating consequences.  This will include parents chasing off their young when they feel they are strong enough to leave and have decided they want to nest build and prepare for their new family. It is a very confusing time for the cygnets who have until that point only been shown love by their parents and often need help in the form of rescue to be relocated to a safer environment.

When the need arises birds will be cared for overnight to provide R&R to ensure ready for release or may need to be transferred to sanctuary who can provide specialist care and vital medical assistance.
